Assalamualaikum! :)
"Freedom of speech" is something BIG nowadays. People keep on wanting it, urging for their so called human rights etc. . . But what's really happening is that, TOO many people urging this whole freedom of speech actually causes it to be something not so new anymore. :/ In fact, if you ask me, I'm actually quite tired of hearing all these nonsensical stuffs about the rights of raising our voices. It's not that I'm totally against it, I mean, there are at some points we need to make our voices heard (i.e world hunger, human trafficking, child abuse, civil wars) , but the whole idea of having freedom of speech becomes like a trend now rather than as a tool to really fight for a noble cause. I mean, look at us now, we're fighting for things that are not worth our time (i.e LGBT, homosexual marriage, censorship of information, etc). Everything has its pros and cons (Y). But it becomes more and more complicated at the end of the day as people demand more and more things to be liberalized. Wow! What about that~! So I'm guessing this is what the Malays usually say "dah bagi betis, nak paha". . . The more we get, the more we demand. We can never be satisfied with what we've gotten. *sigh~
So before I start, the general idea of freedom of speech based on Wikipedia is basically . . .
"the political right to communicate one's opinions and ideas. The term freedom of expression is sometimes used synonymously, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, as with libel, slander, obscenity, sedition (including, for example inciting ethnic hatred), copyright violation, revelation of information that is classified or otherwise"
So, what happens next??
Well, these people would say those who don't agree with these issues addressed by the activists who grasps on tightly to the human rights act are well, narrow minded; or not open enough to accept new ideas of the so called "revolutionary" humans. Same thing like freedom of speech, the list gets going on and on. Most of the things the people fight for initially are things like racial discrimination, poverty, violence, etc. . . Ain't got nothing wrong with that. But then, what I'm saying here is specific to certain things that are already obviously plain "bizarre" or "unnatural" to our human instincts for instance sexual attraction towards people of the same gender. And partly maybe this is the reason why some of the students tend to agree blindly with all these I'd say nonsensical ideas sometimes. . . -Because they don't want to be labeled as outdated. That's why.
This video is no doubt awesome in a way it cuts things short on what we need to know about human rights. But I do believe that not everything listed in the act should be accepted blindly. There are exceptions to some of them I guess. . .
It starts with simple basic ideas which are then abused or interpreted differently by most of the people in our world today. I think you guys can figure out which ones that are misused out of the 30 articles in the above vid.
It's funny how such intelligent beings can sometimes become not so intelligent when they acquire too much knowledge. People would expect this freedom of speech to be the same like how Science and Philosophy worked in the past. Our generation today wanna "break" the profound silence caused by cultural hegemony just like what the scientists did back then; which is not a bad thing, BUT they result in having too many loud unnecessary squeaky noises which can be fatal to themselves; which is in the end, not a good thing at all. . Imagine everyone voicing out their opinions simply because they think what they think is right?? Wouldn't that be a catastrophe?? Liberty22 as they say *do the statue of Liberty pose =w= *. C'mon people, isn't it proof enough that the Americans are trying to obliterate our sights by making us think that LIBERTY is the only way of life?? As much as we deny the need of authority, the real fact is that we do need authority as it is the thing that shapes civilization. Admitting ourselves to total freedom itself I think would actually be the same as submitting yourself totally to the Americans' interpretation of living and guess what? That makes them the authority in a sense. You are under their ideas and control. lol.
So, how has this freedom of speech confused us all?? -A lot I'd say. People tend to get it all mixed up to the extent that they come up with new terms such as a reformist, reinterpretation of the Book of God, reading the Quran through a woman's perspective, etc. It's because they are too caught up with the idea that "It's our right to have our ideas heard, so it's totally OKAY to spread what we think is right based on what we interpreted", they create a lot of confusions in other people especially the ones who are not an expert in that particular field. Again I remind us as Muslims, we always have to bear in mind that we should not get carried away with all these ideas that seem right through our human eyes but actually defies God's Laws.
Some examples on the confusions I was talking about. These people are the ones who are stuck between gender equality and religion. So they fuzed them both and ended up getting something that contradicts the religion's teachings themselves. And yes, this is one of the major problems of associating human rights without fathoming the real ideas behind the teachings of Islam.
1. As Muslims, always refer to our faith. Study deep enough and make sure we understand the values within our own religious faith. For instance, why the Quran prohibits homosexuality, why a man is the head of the family etc. . . Don't get jumpy and end up blurting out our rants just because we feel that we don't prefer certain things to be like what they are now, and that we wanna change it. Rationalize things before we go further. But remember, there is also a method in rationalizing things. If we rationalize things with the wrong idea, that too will also be a problem. Hmm.. *It's not as easy as it looks*
2. From there, pick out the things that we already sorta "shortlisted" as the things that is worth for us to fight for. Meaning it should not be something that opposes our religious beliefs, and it should bring benefits to the society. From then on we can say "Hear us out" etc. . Don't simply swallow everything that is written in the Human Rights Act. Remember, a man made law can never outwit a God's law coz God's laws are wholesome and complete.
3. And towards the end only will we then realize that this is one of the signs of the end of the world. . . It is when humans find various ways to escape the penalties of God -which is by creating their own laws. The Satan at this moment I think are happily partying for their victory and applauding to those who bow down to their whispers and misguidance. And therefore, it is a good sign if we are starting to worry about our generation because it means that we are AWARE of what is really happening around us. Therefore, make sure that we process and filter any information that we receive, and get ready to face the more challenging challenges in the future ahead.
*I know that I usually end up having my topic broader instead of narrowed down. hee~ that explains the long-winded essay. x3 But I can't help it since I have soooo many things to talk about and I have such a limited amount of time to talk about them. So I end up combining them, and I forgot that they are actually two separate topics but are really closely related to each other. >,O So it'll be helpful if you guys who've read my posts, give out comments regarding my style of writing, etc so that I can improve on em in the near future. arigatou nee~ ^w^ *
