SUBCULTURE: PUNK- Something you wouldn't have imagined

ENGL 111: Approaches to Non-Fictional Prose (Pop Cultural Studies)

Haha. This course is no doubt interesting to me, but somehow it's confusing because we tend to use a lot of terms that are defined, rather different than what we usually thought. I mean, we are looking at it in a very analytical way, in which sometimes can be very tiring. I mean, it's hard to figure out the concepts that the authors wanna introduce. Sometimes I feel like I'm almost like studying History

I'll be writing an essay about style in which we have to analyze a song and relate it to what we've learnt, but I haven't really found the song I was looking for.. HELP! Eeks! >,<
So basically in this course, we're learning things about how we perceive and look at things, and what influences the so called "pop culture" that we are experiencing today. It's basically split into 3 major things which are:

1. Mediation          2. Style              3. Brand

As for this post, I'd like to talk a bit about Punk which is in the style category. First thing's first, when we say the word "PUNK", the first thing that'll pop into our heads would be guys with nose rings, Mohawk hair, in a trash talk band, throwing tantrums, hitting things, etc22. That is true. But did you know that these Punks actually rose during the racial tension in Britain. It actually had a lot to do with political stuffs. I mean, if you try listening to Punk genre songs, you wouldn't understand a thing they're saying or rather, "singing" coz they purposely wanna do that coz to them action is LOUD, and I mean literally LOUD

So Punk is actually one of the most I'd say veteran SUBCULTURES in the world (We refer to the Western cultures in the early 60s or 70s). There are a lot of others too. But these are all fragments of Western White cultures. Here lemme list some of the hybrids for ya:

  •  The Teds

               - A.k.a the Teddy Boys                   - Revived from the Old Brit styles
               - Major rival of the Punks             - Conservative
               - Violent, illicit, chauvinistic           - Icons: Elvis Presley

  • The Rockers

               - Motorbikers with black leather jackets   - Drugs & alcohols
               - In search of camaraderie & power          - Icons: Aerosmith
               - Post war emergence

  • The Glams

              - Ornate styles                                          -Icons: Motley Crue
              - Deviant sexualities (gender ambiguity)
              - An Emphasis on self destruction

There are also those that are blended with the Black culture. Maybe I'll talk about them in later posts. But I can't promise ya if I have time to continue with the others. But I'll try me best though coz the this study of subcultures gets more and more interesting.. I'll put up the link here once I got to continue with this topic.

Salam. Till next time~! :)
